Swindon Welcomes Ukraine invites you to a celebration of Ukrainian culture, featuring storytelling, music, and art woven around a display of Vyshyvanka - Ukrainian embroidered garments.
Join us for a special cultural evening showcasing the art and cultural significance of the Vyshyvanka. You will experience a captivating catwalk show brought alive with storytelling, music and art.
19th October 5-7:30 pm (doors open 4:30 pm), Christ Church, Old Town, Swindon.
The event is brought to you by Olya Rnic, creator of the project ”Ukraine’s Spirit of Resistance” which honours the cultural heritage of Ukraine’s iconic embroidered shirt - the Vyshyvanka. Olya has presented and organised several sell out shows already in Bristol with funds going towards humanitarian aid in Ukraine.
A Rich Cultural Heritage and Symbolism
Dating back to the 5th century AD with rich symbolism, the Vyshyvanka is much more than a traditional embroidered dress or shirt; it is a symbol of Ukrainian resilience, culture and identity. Geometric patterns represent fertility and protection from evil, while floral designs celebrate beauty and vitality. The colours in the designs hold deep significance: red symbolises life and energy, black for the earth, and white represents purity.

From Tradition to Global Fashion
Historically crafted by hand in Ukraine, the Vyshyvanka has evolved from a folk tradition to a contemporary fashion statement, appearing on international catwalks and embraced by Hollywood stars. This event celebrates the evolution of the Vyshyvanka from traditional to vintage and designer, with narrated stories accompanied by contemporary Ukrainian music and live performances by the Kozachky ensemble.
Authentic Stories of Ukraine's Spirit of Resistance
Hear personal stories that embody Ukraine's Spirit of Resistance and learn how the Vyshyvanka continues to play a role in defining the nation's identity. The evening will highlight how this embroidery has come to symbolise Ukrainians’ love of beauty and their fight for freedom.
Contemporary and Decorative Art
